Mounjaro Portugal sales top €1 million in a day as doctors seek prescribing data
September 28, 2026

The Mounjaro Portugal sales figures crossed €1 million in a single day in September 2026, the first time the tirzepatide injection has reached that mark in Portuguese pharmacies. More than 3,000 packs sold in those 24 hours, according to Health Market Research (HMR) data reported by 24 Notícias. In August, the same daily value required two days to accumulate.
Days later, the Ordem dos Médicos asked Infarmed, the national medicines regulator, for prescription-level information on Mounjaro. The Bastonário (president of the Order) said the aim was to understand the Portuguese market “with detail and rigour”, and specifically whether the rules covering commercialisation and prescribing are being followed. The request is a data-gathering step, not a finding. The Order has not concluded that the product is being prescribed irregularly.
Mounjaro Portugal sales cross €1 million in one day
Mounjaro has been sold in Portugal since 2024. The September record compresses earlier growth. A value that took two days to reach in August now arrives inside one. Two brands dominate the category in this market, Mounjaro from Eli Lilly and Wegovy from Novo Nordisk. Together they moved 512,803 packs and more than €130 million in 2025.
The pace continued in 2026. Infarmed figures put combined Mounjaro and Wegovy sales at €55.2 million in the first quarter alone. That amount exceeds 40% of the full-year 2025 value for the two products. The single-day €1 million total fits the steeper curve, and both the regulator and the professional body are reviewing activity.
How Mounjaro and Wegovy differ
| Mounjaro | Wegovy (and Ozempic class) | |
|---|---|---|
| Active substance | Tirzepatide (dual GIP + GLP-1 agonist) | Semaglutide (GLP-1 agonist) |
| Company | Eli Lilly | Novo Nordisk |
| EU indications | Type 2 diabetes; weight management under clinical criteria (BMI plus comorbidities) | Type 2 diabetes (Ozempic); chronic weight management (Wegovy) |
| Administration | Weekly subcutaneous injection | Weekly subcutaneous injection |
| Portuguese list price per pack | Roughly €180 to €400, depending on dose | Same order of magnitude; not itemised in the source reporting |
| SNS reimbursement for obesity | Not reimbursed for weight control; the patient pays | Not reimbursed for weight control |

Both act on the hormones that govern appetite and satiety. Both are given weekly by injection. Both are prescription-only. Neither is licensed as a lifestyle slimming product. Weight-management use is tied to BMI thresholds and obesity-related comorbidities, and it should follow an individual clinical assessment.

Why the Ordem dos Médicos wants prescription data
The Order asked Infarmed for information on how Mounjaro is being prescribed. Its stated purpose is compliance. The request seeks to confirm whether the conditions attached to weight-management use are being respected and to show volume by indication, prescriber and channel.
The clinical rules are explicit. Mounjaro is authorised in the EU for type 2 diabetes and, under defined conditions, for weight management. Weight-management use is tied to BMI thresholds and obesity-related comorbidities. It is prescription-only and should follow an individual clinical assessment. The College of Clinical Pharmacology has previously argued for rational prescribing of GLP-1 receptor agonists and warned against inappropriate use.
Two enforcement threads sit behind the request. European authorities have flagged illegal online and social-media sales of products marketed as GLP-1 analogues. In 2025 the Polícia Judiciária arrested a doctor suspected of prescribing diabetes medicines to people without diabetes so that they could lose weight and obtain state reimbursement. The Ordem dos Médicos opened a disciplinary inquiry in that case.
Access, cost and the SNS question
When it is used for weight control, Mounjaro is not reimbursed by the Serviço Nacional de Saúde. Patients pay out of pocket, at €180 to €400 per pack. With treatment continuing weekly the annual cost can reach several thousand euros. The same is true for Wegovy in the obesity indication.
Infarmed has been studying the budget impact of a possible reimbursement of anti-obesity medicines. The policy tension is straightforward. Obesity drives diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other high-cost conditions, so effective treatment could reduce later spending. The products are expensive at current volumes, so covering them would add a large line item to the SNS.
Demand has already forced Infarmed to put supply-management measures in place for this class, because production capacity has not kept pace with global and national demand.
Watchpoints for the months ahead
- Infarmed’s reply to the Ordem dos Médicos, including volume by indication (diabetes versus obesity), prescriber specialty, and any geographic or channel concentration.
- Any tightening of prescribing conditions, or additional monitoring, for GLP-1 and GIP-GLP-1 products.
- A formal Infarmed or government position on SNS reimbursement of anti-obesity medicines.
- Supply notices or rationing if demand continues at September’s daily rate.
- Further enforcement on illegal online analogues and on reimbursement fraud.
